Frequently Asked Questions about Ayurvedic Herbal Infusions
What is the difference between a Vata, Pitta and Kapha herbal infusion?
Vata, Pitta and Kapha are the three doshas of Ayurveda, representing vital energies associated with different body constitutions. The Vata blend soothes nervous and dry profiles, Pitta cools intense temperaments, and Kapha invigorates slower constitutions. To learn more, read our guide on doshas and Ayurvedic herbal infusions.
Do Ayurvedic herbal infusions contain caffeine?
No, none of our Ayurvedic herbal infusions contain any caffeine. They are made exclusively from spices, plants, roots and flowers. You can enjoy them at any time of day, including in the evening before bed.
Can I drink an Ayurvedic herbal infusion during pregnancy?
Some ingredients used in Ayurveda (liquorice, sage, certain spices) are not recommended during pregnancy. We advise you to consult your doctor or midwife before drinking them regularly, and to favour gentler blends such as Inner Peace.
How should I store my loose-leaf Ayurvedic herbal infusions?
Keep them in an airtight container, away from light, heat and humidity. A metal tea caddy is ideal for preserving the aroma of the spices. Best consumed within 18 months of opening.
Are Ayurvedic herbal infusions suitable for children?
Gentle blends without active botanicals (Inner Peace and certain floral blends) can be offered to children aged 6 and above, in moderate amounts. Avoid blends high in ginger or liquorice for young children. If in doubt, ask your pharmacist for advice.
Going further with Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a traditional Indian system of medicine recognised by the World Health Organization. To explore the principles of the doshas, the role of spices and the history of this centuries-old tradition in depth, we invite you to read our complete guide to Ayurvedic herbal infusions. There you will find scientific references (EMA, WHO) and the cultural sources that inform our approach to selection.
How to brew an ayurvedic herbal infusion
Ayurvedic herbal infusions are made primarily from spices, roots and bark. They are best prepared as a decoction to draw out their full depth of aroma:
- Amount: 1 heaped teaspoon per 8 oz cup, or 6 g per teapot
- Water: bring to a near-boil (around 200°F / 95°C), not a rolling boil
- Time: 8 to 10 minutes, covered, for spice-rich blends
- Frequency: 2 to 3 cups a day, varying the blend to suit the moment
- For a chai-style cup: stir in a splash of plant-based milk at the end of steeping
A tip from our house: always steep with the lid on, so the essential oils from the spices don't escape into the air.
