Kenya BOP-1: a straightforward African black tea
Kenya's high plateaus, rising between 1,500 and 2,700 metres around Mount Kenya, give tea plants intense sunshine and regular rainfall that yield leaves of remarkable vitality. The BOP-1 grade (Broken Orange Pekoe 1) refers to finely broken leaves that release their aromas quickly and colour the water a deep copper hue within seconds of steeping.
This Kenyan black tea wins you over with its honest character: no frills, a bold opening, a rounded malty heart, and a gentle astringency in the finish that wakes the palate. It is equally enjoyable on its own, where its mineral edge shines through, or with a splash of milk to soften its personality.
At Thés & Traditions, Julien Huot selected this origin for its consistency and the liveliness of its liquor, two qualities that matter most in a morning tea. If this bold, full-bodied style appeals to you, explore our black tea collection and our complete guide to black tea.
Kenya: a great high-altitude terroir for black tea
While black tea often brings China, India or Sri Lanka to mind, Kenya has established itself as one of the world's leading tea producers and its largest black tea exporter. Tea cultivation spreads across hundreds of thousands of hectares on the high plateaus surrounding Mount Kenya, the Rift Valley and the shores of Lake Victoria. Straddling the equator, tea plants thrive in a generous climate and mineral-rich red volcanic soil, yielding vigorous leaves harvested all year round.
The industry, organised around the Kenya Tea Development Authority, brings together large estates and hundreds of thousands of smallholders, placing Kenyan production at the heart of global exports, with processing facilities widely recognised for their expertise. The country produces several celebrated grades and cultivars, among which the Milima and Marinyn gardens rank among the most sought-after names in African black tea, prized for their mellow, malty character and the consistency of their harvests.
BOP-1: understanding the Kenyan black tea grade
On a packet of black tea, the letters following the origin indicate the grade, meaning the size and appearance of the leaf after processing, not a reflection of flavour quality. BOP-1 stands for Broken Orange Pekoe 1: a well-crafted broken leaf, finer than a whole leaf, which produces an intense, richly coloured brew.
- FOP / GFOP (Flowery and Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe): whole leaves with golden young buds, for a softer, more nuanced cup.
- BOP (Broken Orange Pekoe): broken leaves, faster steeping, bolder flavour and deeper colour.
- CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl): leaves rolled into small pellets, widely used for morning teas, iced teas and blends.
Our Kenya BOP-1 was chosen for its balance: strong enough to give you a proper morning boost, yet clean enough to stay clear and free of harsh bitterness. Compared to a muscular Assam or a brighter Ceylon, it sits comfortably in the middle, rounded and warming.
The flavour profile of Kenya BOP-1 black tea
Kenya BOP-1 black tea first catches the eye with its deep, amber liquor with copper highlights. On the palate, it is round, well-structured and warming, carried by honest malt notes, a gentle woody undertone, and that subtle mineral quality of red earth so characteristic of East African teas.
Appearance and aroma
The cup glows with a bright copper hue. On the nose, malt takes centre stage, accompanied by a warm, lightly woody note, without any heaviness.
On the palate
The flavour is direct and unfussy, with a measured bitterness and a clean, lively sweetness in the finish. Bolder than a Darjeeling, rounder than a plain Earl Grey, this is an everyday black tea with real character, one that stands up beautifully to a splash of milk.
How to brew Kenyan black tea
Brewing is straightforward and forgiving, as this tea keeps its composure even with a longer steep. Use approximately 12 g of leaves per litre, about a heaped tablespoon per large mug. Pour freshly boiled water at 100°C into a pre-warmed teapot, then steep for 2 to 4 minutes depending on the strength you prefer. The longer the steep, the bolder the cup.
Drink it plain to fully appreciate the malt, or with a little milk for a rounded, comforting morning brew. Served over ice, its structure holds up beautifully.
When to enjoy it
With its natural vigour, Kenya BOP-1 black tea is a natural fit for waking up and breakfast: its caffeine delivers a clean, effective lift to start the day well. It also works perfectly mid-morning or at lunch, alongside pastries, toast, jam or a leisurely brunch.
Wellbeing and storage
Like all teas from Camellia sinensis, Kenyan black tea naturally contains caffeine and antioxidant compounds, the polyphenols present in the leaf. Its caffeine provides an energising effect appreciated in the morning, while the ritual of brewing invites a genuine moment of pause. It fits naturally into a balanced diet and a healthy, mindful lifestyle, without any exaggerated health promises. To preserve its malty aromas, store it away from light, moisture and strong odours, in its metal tin or resealed pouch.
