Hibiscus sabdariffa, more commonly known as bissap, is a species with a thousand virtues that has been enchanting our cups for centuries. This medicinal plant continues to seduce natural herbal tea lovers with its exceptional properties, its beautiful characteristic red color and its strong visual impact during infusion.
Originating from South Asia and Africa, this traditional drink quickly spread throughout the world. Bissap juice, as it's called in West Africa, has become a symbol of refreshment and well-being, deeply rooted in the culture of many regions. Its ancient origin makes it a drink rich in meaning and history.
Belonging to the mallow family, hibiscus has over 200 varieties. Also known as roselle or Chinese rose, this species thrives particularly in tropical climates.
The part of the plant used for the infusion is not the flower itself, but the calyxes, these fleshy envelopes that protect the bud. Once dried, these calyxes offer a flower infusion with an intense red color.
A recent study published in the journal Nutrients reveals that hibiscus contains an exceptional concentration of anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that fight oxidative stress (Nutrients, 2019).
Research conducted by Tufts University has shown that regular consumption of this herbal tea helps significantly reduce blood pressure. Blood pressure can decrease by up to 7.2 points on average after 6 weeks of regular use (The Journal of Nutrition, 2010).
A recent study has shown that regular consumption of hibiscus can reduce cholesterol levels by up to 15% in 12 weeks (Phytomedicine, 2007). Moreover, its effect on intestinal transit is particularly beneficial.
This herbal tea naturally helps improve digestion thanks to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It can also relieve certain discomforts related to the digestive system, while helping to reduce the feeling of fatigue associated with intestinal disorders. Its effect on intestinal transit is particularly appreciated by people suffering from digestive issues. These effects have been highlighted in a scientific review published in Phytotherapy Research (Phytotherapy Research, 2005).
To prepare a delicious infusion, use one tablespoon of dried flowers per cup. Pour boiling water and let it steep for 5-10 minutes. You can drink it hot or cold.
For a refreshing iced version, let your preparation cool before adding ice cubes to obtain a delicious iced tea.
Known as karkadeh in Egypt, this hot or cold drink is an integral part of local traditions. For the iced version, use cold water and let it steep longer (12-24h in the refrigerator).
The recommended dose is 2-3 cups per day. For each cup, use one flower per cup or 2 tablespoons of flowers for one liter of water. You can add a teaspoon of honey to sweeten the taste.
It's important to note some contraindications for hibiscus consumption:
Opt preferably for loose hibiscus tea, which better preserves its natural qualities. The dried flowers should have a beautiful purple color and a characteristic fruity and tangy taste.
To preserve all the qualities of your herbal tea, store the flowers in a dry and dark place. For preparation, simply steep the flowers in hot water for 5-10 minutes.
Hibiscus tea, with its beautiful bright red color and numerous virtues, fully deserves its place in our daily lives. Whether you prefer it hot or cold, it will captivate you with its taste qualities and health benefits.

Excellent (Translated review)
A bit too tangy for me to drink alone and without sugar. I will try adding a bit of mint or cinnamon as suggested on the site. Otherwise, I will add a touch of honey. The dried flower petals are of good quality (Translated review)
