How long to steep black tea?

Depending on its origin, black tea should steep for 2 to 7 minutes. It should be placed in hot water, but never boiling, to avoid altering its taste or quality.

Steeping black tea according to its origin

Preparing black tea is an institution. Teapot, leaves, water, and infusion... no detail is left to chance for a cup with perfect aromas.

The type of black tea is the decisive criterion for knowing the steeping time. For Darjeeling black tea, for example, the steeping time varies from 2 to 5 minutes. Crushed leaves also require a shorter steeping time than whole leaves. Finally, those who prefer a tea strong in flavors sometimes let it steep for up to 7 minutes. Spiced teas, on the other hand, should steep for less than 5 minutes.

Steeping black tea: pay attention to water temperature!

The water temperature is also a determining factor for preparing a cup of tea. In hot water, the aromas diffuse more quickly. However, if boiling, it alters the taste and benefits. Be careful not to err in the other direction though. Water below 80°C (176°F) does not allow the flavor to fully develop.
