The fugu, a round little lucky charm

In Japan, the fugu is far more than a fish: in the western part of the country, it is often called fuku, a word that sounds just like the one for good fortune. With its puffed-out cheeks, tiny fins and contented expression, it has become a beloved character, given as a gift to wish someone happiness. On these bowls, a cheerful parade of fugu swims all the way around the outside, against a backdrop of seigaiha waves drawn in white dots.
