Organic Gunpowder Tea: the pearl tea from China

Produced in Zhejiang province, organic Gunpowder originates from eastern China. In reference to its tightly rolled ball-shaped leaves, the Chinese called it “pearl tea,” while the English nicknamed it gunpowder tea. When steeped, Gunpowder leaves yield an amber, astringent and slightly full-bodied liquor. Our organic Gunpowder can be enjoyed plain or accompanied by fresh mint leaves.

The traditional uses of Gunpowder tea

Like all green teas, organic Gunpowder naturally contains polyphenols and a slight amount of caffeine. These elements contribute to its aromatic richness and unique personality. Traditionally, green tea is appreciated for pleasantly accompanying the end of meals and offering a moment of relaxation.

Gunpowder is also used in the preparation of the famous mint tea, where it brings its full-bodied flavor and typical freshness.

Our tasting tips

How to prepare Gunpowder tea?

The preparation of organic Gunpowder is similar to that of other green tea varieties. Unlike black teas, the water should be simmering and not boiling. To soften its astringency, you can rinse the leaves before steeping.

How much Gunpowder tea?

Count 12 to 15 grams of organic Gunpowder leaves per 1 liter of water. For a standard cup, plan for approximately 3 grams, which is a level teaspoon.

What is the ideal steeping temperature for Gunpowder tea?

Steeping organic Gunpowder green tea requires water at 75–80°C. Let steep for 2 to 3 minutes so that the leaves unfold and release all their aromas. Before steeping, you can scald your accessories, teapot and cup, for optimal tasting.

When to drink Gunpowder tea?

Plain or infused with fresh mint, organic Gunpowder green tea can be savored at any time of day. Very often used to prepare a traditional mint tea, it can also be enjoyed iced for a refreshing beverage with herbal or citrus notes.

The advantages of loose-leaf Gunpowder tea

At Thés & Traditions, our organic Gunpowder green tea is offered as loose leaf. Its packaging in a resealable bag or metal tin guarantees optimal freshness and extended storage. Unlike tea bags, our loose teas are made from whole leaves for an infusion with authentic taste.
