Green tea or black tea

Although they come from the same plant, green tea and organic black tea offer different benefits and distinct flavour profiles. Here is everything you need to know about each variety to help you make the right choice.

Green Tea vs Black Tea: Health Differences

All teas come from a shrub known as Camellia sinensis. It is the production process after harvesting that determines the variety. The fundamental difference lies in how the leaves are oxidised. To produce green tea, oxidation is stopped as early as possible. Black tea, on the other hand, is deliberately allowed to oxidise for longer. Because its leaves undergo minimal oxidation, green tea retains most of its catechins and nutrients, offering greater health benefits than black tea. Green tea is often recommended as part of a weight management approach. It does, however, have a shorter shelf life. Thanks to its longer oxidation process, black tea can keep its flavour intact for years. Black tea is characterised by a bolder, more intense taste. It still contains valuable antioxidants, though in smaller quantities than green tea. It is particularly well suited for supporting digestion and soothing an upset stomach.

Green Tea vs Black Tea for Weight Loss

Tea is widely known as a helpful companion when you are looking to shed a few extra pounds. Which variety should you reach for to support weight loss? Are green tea and black tea equally effective at burning calories? First of all, whichever you choose, it is worth noting that loose-leaf tea is preferable to tea bags. It should be stored in an airtight container to preserve its properties for as long as possible. Tea, whether black or green, is best enjoyed plain, without added sugar or milk. The catechins found in tea have a fat-burning effect that is particularly valued during a diet. Green tea, being richer in catechins, appears better suited for boosting weight loss. These antioxidant-rich molecules help reduce feelings of hunger and limit the body's fat storage. A word of caution, though: green tea alone is not enough to lose weight effectively. A balanced, mindful approach to eating remains essential.

Green Tea or Black Tea in the Morning

A morning cup of tea is a cherished ritual for many. The choice between green and black tea often comes down to personal taste, but is one better suited to the morning? Ideally, a stimulating, energising tea in the morning is a good way to give yourself a genuine boost to start the day. Black tea is therefore the better choice for waking up your body and mind.

Green Tea or Black Tea in the Evening

Drinking tea in the evening can sometimes disrupt sleep. To avoid tossing and turning for hours, it is best to avoid tea after 4 p.m. If you really cannot go without an evening cup, opt for green tea, which contains less theine. You can also reduce its stimulating effect by steeping it briefly in hot water first and discarding that initial infusion. Most of the theine is released in this first brew, leaving you with a much gentler cup to enjoy.
